The new design goes up on Friday and we’ll be around celebrating its genius on Friday night with 2 for 1 drinks until 8pm. Then heading down to the basement for the Sugarmen, Tuska and Britain + Heavenly Jukebox DJs

Guardian Live – An evening with the Long Read

2000

Wednesday 17th feb

Just over a year ago the Guardian embarked on a new venture, launching the Long Read – a slot reserved for storytelling unbound by the usual constraints of daily journalism. A single piece might be the result of months of work, intensive reporting and forensic editing of a kind usually associated with high-end magazines or book publishing. Each piece would go as deep into a subject as the writer was able to dive. Since then, the Long Read has established itself as the UK’s home of longform journalism, publishing nearly 200 stories.

Join Long Read editor Jonathan Shainin for an evening of readings and conversation about the art of longform journalism. We will be joined by two regular contributors: Sam Knight, who has written about everything from government privatisation to panda sex, and Wendell Steavenson, who has reported from Georgia, Iraq and Egypt for the New Yorker, as well as profiling Britain’s cleverest man for the Long Read.

Calderdale Flood Relief Fund Show

Wednesday 13th Feb

Live:

SMOKE FAIRIES

THE RAILS

HAYLEY ROSS

+ guests

Deep Hum special raising money for those effected by the flooding in the Calder Valley

We’re putting on this Calderdale Flood Fundraiser next week at The Social. It’s only £5 to get in and Smoke Fairies will be playing live with Hayley Ross and the Heavenly Jukebox DJs.

This time last year we were up in Hebden Bridge for the start of Heavenly’s 25th celebrations and were supposed to be up there again later this month for a Caught By The River event. It’s an amazing place and we met some really wonderful people whilst we were there and got to hang out at what is probably the UK’s best venue, Hebden Bridge Trades.

The scenes of damage over Christmas were pretty shocking. It’s going to take a long time for the town and surrounding area to recover – lots of people have lost their homes and businesses.
Hope you can make it down.

There’s a link to their fundraising page below or grab and ticket and head along

Super Bowl 50

Super Bowl 16

After 6 sold out years, London’s biggest and most popular charity Super Bowl party returns to The Social for Super Bowl 50

We are bringing back all the things that have made us so popular. The very best craft beers from the UK and US.  The best gourmet hot dogs you can imagine from Dogtown London (who smashed it at the Wembley NFL games).  The famous Social sound system.  Great pre game DJs. The friendliest atmosphere in London.

It’s not all the same, though. This year we’re going to be even better!  We’re bringing in a load more screens this year – we’ll have huge HD screens upstairs and down. You’re going to get a great view of the game.

We don’t do gimmicks. No cheerleaders.  No VIP zones.  No funny business.

For the second year, every single penny of your ticket price will go to the charity SCI.  They treat young people and vulnerable adults for schomatosis, preventing a load of horrible conditions that have a terrible effect on individuals and communities.  Every 50p treats someone for a year.

Your £9 ticket will protect 18 people. And get you into an awesome party.

Heavenly Social Pale Ale Barrel Party

ctb

On Wed 25 Nov we’ll be launching our very own, very limited draft beer with the considerable and kind help of Camden Town Brewery

We only have one barrel of this so get down on the 25th if you want to taste it. Carl, Tim, Danny and Robin from the bar chose the hops, strength and style of beer and then spent a day at the brewery making it. No one has tasted yet, we’ll find out on Wednesday whether we’ve pulled it off.

Also that night we have a special Deep Hum with Wide Skies launching their new single + support from Gulp!

WIDE SKIES

+ VERY SPECIAL GUESTS: GULP

Join WIDE SKIES at The Social to celebrate the launch of their third single Waiting for the Answers

It begins with acoustic guitar and Hannah’s yearning vocal — an intimate opening that reflects the song’s theme of lonely solitude…
But in its search to make sense of being alone, Waiting for the Answers soon becomes urgent. Rearing up and breaking free, it gallops home as a perfectly formed pop song.

Recorded in the summer of 2015 (along with the final tracks of their debut album, planned for release in early 2016), WIDE SKIES’ third single Waiting for the Answers, again self-released on their own label Before The Dawn Records, signals a gear change for the band. While they had previously self produced and recorded in their own studio, this year they spent summer days recording at Bluebell Sounds with producer/engineer Ian Dowling (Bombay Bicycle Club, Adele, Madison Ward and the Mama Bear), developing an exciting new focus and intensifying the enchantment of their unique sound.
2015 saw the release of WIDE SKIES’ first two singles, Take Care Of Love and Gold Dust. WIDE SKIES have received great support at radio including numerous plays from BBC 6 Music’s Lauren Laverne (who made Take Care Of Love her ‘headphones moment’), live sessions for Robert Elms on his BBC London show, plays on XFM from John Kennedy and Georgie Rogers and plays on Amazing Radio.

Inspired by luminaries such as Feist, Kate Bush, Portishead, Elbow, Fleetwood Mac and Burt Bacharach, WIDE SKIES create a rare and arresting atmosphere in which they paint scenes of love, loss and courage, weaving the sound of Folk, Soul and 60ʼs Pop perfectly with their British Indie roots. Vocalist Hannah Caughlin has the endearing softness of Natasha Khan, but together with her bandmate Jamie McDonald they achieve a merge not unlike Nico and Lou Reed. With their lush recordings and spellbinding live performances, they have sealed their reputation with a loyal fan base, and are rapidly establishing themselves in the hearts and minds of broader audiences.

Hannah previously brought her vocal and writing talents to The Accidental, The Memory Band, The Bicycle Thieves and notable pop producers Xenomania. Jamie’s earlier incarnation was in the band South who released four albums on labels including Moʼwax and Sanctuary, as well as touring with The Strokes and Ian Brown. He has recently spent time as a tour guitarist with Finley Quaye and Nicolai Fraiture of The Strokes.

WIDE SKIES, led by Hannah Caughlin and Jamie McDonald, are supported by the brilliant musicianship of three other band members: Ascher Nathan on keyboards (touring member of the band South), Alister Wedderburn on bass (formerly of Look, Stranger!) and Dav Shiel on drums (previous member of Beth Jeans Houghton & The Hooves of Destiny).

Gulp promo 2015

GULP are Guto Pryce (Super Furry Animals) and Lindsey Leven, with Gid Goundrey on guitar and various friends on drums – including Stuart Kidd (Euros Childs/Norman Blake) and Kliph Scurlock (Flaming Lips/Gruff Rhys).

“A thing of eyeball popping beauty, that deserves to have psychotropic palm leaves wafted at it’s feet (and then, ideally, eaten)” Artrocker ***** 5 stars

“It’s an amalgam of 21st century electronic squiggles and vintage airy psych-folk, as contemporary as video games and as old as the hills” Spin.com

“(Game Love’s) spooked demeanour suggests The Wicker Man getting fresh with Nancy Sinatra. That’s Gulp: Easy to swallow, hard to forget” Guardian Guide Pick Of The Week

Fuzzed-up bass, dream-pop vocals, acoustic and electric drums and synths … their cinematic and ethereal sound is a musical manifestation of the road trip; the landscape and events along the way, filmic scenes and melodies – from the sun-squinting, flickering saturation and lens flare of the Californian desert, to the gloamin of rural Scottish and Welsh homescapes.

June 2012 saw the release of their debut single, Game Love, which received a 5* review from Artrocker magazine and pick of the week in The Guardian Guide. Gulp toured the UK and Ireland supporting Django Django. In 2013 they enjoyed appearances at many of the UK’s summer festivals, including Green man, Kendal Calling and Festival No.6.

Gulp’s second album, is scheduled for release early 2016…
