Special guest DJ – Kevin Rowland

KR

Slipstream – Saturday 14th Nov

DJs:

KEVIN ROWLAND (DEXYS)

+ SLIPSTREAM DJs

Kevin Rowland – legendary frontman and artistic visionary of Dexys Midnight Runners – will be DJing at Slipstream at The Social on Saturday 14th November. One of the true, certifiable geniuses of British pop, Kevin is also a highly respected DJ.

Presenting his own uniquely brilliant interpretation of the modern DJ set, Kevin expresses a deep love of known and neglected gems, thrillingly finding gaps within verses to occasionally add his own emotive vocals, he revels in the chance to underline the profound lyrics of overlooked singles. It’s a style that’s at once moving and truly inspiring.

It’s often said that if you get a chance to see Kevin Rowland perform a DJ set, you should leave your cynicism at home and go at once. Here is your opportunity.

Film Chat Podcast presents The (Mostly) Ungoogleable Film Night

TB

Monday 26th October

A barrage of Google-proof cinematic quiz questions topped off with a screening of Italian horror classic TENEBRE

Prepare for a unique, bamboozling film quiz that makes an utter mockery of your attempts to cheat using the internet! Google, IMDB, a direct line to Richard Osman—all are useless in the face of our expertly crafted questions that will keep you on your toes and off your phones. Featuring edited movie montages, repurposed soundtracks, a seasonal spooky ghost story, and very probably Kevin Bacon, our sideways swipe at film trivia will be whip-smart, irreverent, and 100% certified ungoogleable. Mostly.

TICKETS

PLUS! With Halloween looming, we thought we’d follow up the head-scratching with some blood-curdling by screening Dario Argento’s slasher classic Tenebre. First released in 1982, but banned from sale in the UK as a “video nasty” until 1999, Tenebre is a synth-drenched masterpiece with all the serial murders, virtuoso crane shots, and metafictional commentary any horror fan could possibly ask for.

Stick around afterwards to have a drink with your hosts and listen to them shamelessly plug their podcast, Film Chat: the greatest movie podcast with more episodes than listeners. Check out our latest gabbling – news, reviews, jingles, assorted nonsense – at soundcloud.com/filmchatpodcast

Christmas Bookings at The Social

BirdStamp-B&W-single

Christmas bookings are now OPEN at The Social for 2015

We can hold parties for smaller groups – reserving booths on either floor – or big parties with both spaces available to hire up to 250 people for the whole venue. Dates and space are limited but drop us an email here to request availability and info.

Downstairs1webUpstairs1web

THE UPSTAIRS BAR (holds up to 75 people – licensed until 1am)

The upstairs bar can hold up to 75 people, offering a sanctuary from madness of Oxford Street, a bolthole for skivers and barflies; somewhere where the days blur into nights and the dusty light is always conducive to losing a few hours to alcohol and good company.

Unchanged in a decade and a half, it’s made up of 5 large leather booths each set around an aged gunmetal grey table. The room itself is entirely clad in wood. Originally sauna-like, the walls have fully matured like a Soho dandy due to years of excessive smoking and drinking. Ever-present in the corner is our beautiful, hard working AMI Continental Jukebox. It’s soundtracked countless first dates, birthdays, after shows and lost weekends… even the odd wake.

Although listings and features on the bar tend to focus on the nightly events in the basement (a space we couldn’t be prouder of), for many people the Upstairs Bar is truly the heart of The Social.

BASEMENT (holds up to 150 – licensed until 1am)

The Basement is where the partying usually happens (although to be honest upstairs is not shy!) with a full club PA, DJ set up and live stage. We can host 150 people downstairs and have limited availability for private hires in December

Designed back in 1999 by a partnership of David Adjaye and Will Russell (now of Pentagram) with the proviso of withstanding nuclear attack or – at the very least – the worst that people could chuck at it, The Social basement has launched over a million hugely successful hangovers

Saturday 3rd Oct

In celebration of 50 years of Super 8, Raindance Film Festival will be hosting a special evening with Don Letts

The Don will be previewing his latest project – ‘Two 77’s Clash’, which looks at the myth and the reality of the ‘punky-reggae party’ (punk’s only untold story). Don will also be dipping into his extensive Super 8mm archive to give a taste of what’s to come from what he describes as “a black n’ white story told in glorious colour”…

Following that join us for a Super 8 punk party at The Social with a very special DJ set from Don Letts, Douglas Hart & Andy Fraser, and live music rom Telegram – https://www.facebook.com/teletelegramgram

Julian Hand will be in charge of the super 8 punk projections which will include some of his own work as well as footage from Don Letts’ The Punk Rock Movie and Captain Zip aka John the Super 8 Punk.

Big thanks to Julian Hand and Demian Castellanos for producing the music and video for the teaser trailer.

Screening at Vue Piccadilly, starting at 6:30pm, with after party at The Social, 5 Little Portland Street (walking distance from Vue Piccadilly)

Wales in the Rugby World Cup at The Social

welsh maffia image

This September we’ll be dusting off the big screens in the upstairs bar for first time since that depressing night in May when half the country went mad and inflicted another 5 years of misery on us all.

This time we’ll be throwing our weight behind another improbable cause – the Welsh national team in this year’s Rugby World Cup.

20th Sept – Wales vs Uruguay

26th Sept – Wales vs England

1st Oct – Wales vs Fiji

10th Oct – Wales vs Australia

As many of you will surely know or nervously suspect, the Social has long had strong Welsh roots (well, one of us is Welsh and the Super Furries played downstairs in 2001). Recently, we’ve made a point of always stocking beers from the mighty Tiny Rebel Brewery in Newport on the bar (one of the range we always carry – their red ale, Cwtch – was recently awarded Champion Beer of Britain at the Great British Beer Festival). Basically, a night in the upstairs bar is pretty much exactly the same as a heavy old session in Cardiff. So it was obvious that we’d be coming out in support of the boyos in Red when they storm out to chuck the egg about in a field.

We hope you’ll join us for all four initial Welsh group games (on 20th, 26th Sept, 1st Oct and 10th Oct). We’ll also show the support games from some of the lesser rugby playing nations (England, South Africa, New Zealand etc) on those dates as well. Each night will no doubt involve the full spectrum of emotions, a Taff friendly playlist on the jukebox, the odd guest DJ and some great Welsh beers.

These events will be ticketed and strictly limited in number – don’t hang around getting your tickets.

£5 entry including a free bottle of Tiny Rebel with every ticket. Might even see if the kitchen can knock out some rarebit for old times sake
