Friday Night Disco

With Anna Greenwood (Guilty Pleasures) and guests.

Start the weekend with a basement bash of Friday night frolicking as Anna and friends bring you pop, rock, disco and a dollop of good old fashioned fun.

Dancing positively encouraged.

Everyone knows Friday night is the best night of the week. It’s a simple fact. Why else is do we thank Crunchie it is Friday? There aren’t any American themed diners serving enticing fat-congealed platters of fried orange foods called T.G.I. Tuesday are there? Even old misery faced King Goth Robert Smith declared he was in love with Friday. But he also used to rob his mum’s lippy and his hair is a right sight so maybe he isn’t the best ambassador for this.

Anna Greenwood (Guilty Pleasures resident dj / singer and show off) will instead be our Friday ambassador henceforth and is here to start your weekend the way it’s meant to – with music, dancing and good old-fashioned FUN all in the underground hedonists hang out that is the Social at the Friday Night Disco!

Flinging themselves about behind the decks, Anna and February’s guest Lulu le Vay will be playing pop, rock, disco, 80s soul and records that you know all the words to that sound even better after a pint.

Feel the work woe slip away as a jukebox of joy gets your weekend off to a super start and have you dancing your shoes off, punching the air with glee and singing all the all the way home on the night bus much to the delight of your fellow passengers.

Come and join us on Friday 17th for a right good knees up and disco dancing good times!

And It’s Goodbye From Him?

Sonic Cathedral presents Fairewell and Crushed Beaks

According to this week’s NME, word is that Fairewell’s Johnny White is talking about quitting live shows.  All the more reason to grab tickets for his show at the bar on Feb 13th!

Sonic Cathedral – Monday 13th Feb

Live:

FAIREWELL

CRUSHED BEAKS

Fairewell’s second ever headline show and third gig in total following his hugely acclaimed debut album, ‘Poor, Poor Grendel’, which was released on Sonic Cathedral Recordings late last year. Fairewell is Johnny White, originally from Sheffield, now based in north London. He makes music that is both grandiose and introspective and claims to be influenced by Popol Vuh, cLOUDDEAD and The Black Heart Procession, but we can hear The Radio Dept, M83 and a whole lot more as well. Live he is joined by Joe Daniel (Angular) on bass and Josh Alexander on drums for something that is a lot heavier – comparisons have been made to Flying Saucer Attack.

Crushed Beaks, New London-based duo who combine full-on noise with melody, texture and atmosphere. Their debut single ‘Close-Ups’ / ‘Sun Dogs’ was released on Too Pure last November and was one of the year’s most promising new releases.

Plus guest DJ Pete Gofton and cult films

The London Particular At The Social

The London Particular residency at the bar is due to finish at the end of next week, so if you haven’t had a chance to get down and try their brilliant food then do it now!!

We have all been blown away by the new dishes that Becky, Kanji and crew have been serving up every day and have loved having them take over our kitchen for the last two months.  We hope to get them back in again some time in the future for another residency.

They have put in long hours to make it happen, we’d like to thank them for all their hard work – it’s been a pleasure to have them all around.

Don’t forgot to go and try out their cafe in New Cross where all the social dishes and lots lots more can be found 7 days a week (and the best coffee too!)

– – –

The London Particular – ”A thick pea soup, named after the blanket smogs for which London was famous in the 1950’s… a real pea souper.”

For a short time, the fine people from The London Particular will be taking up residence in our kitchen and giving the menu a radical shake up.

The results over the trial period of the last two weeks have been jaw-droppingly brilliant. Word is already spreading that the bar is now offering really great locally sourced, homemade, affordable food.

In case you haven’t had a chance to check it out yet, you can enjoy the likes of Beef, Kernel & Bramley stew, Slow Cooked Pork Belly Rolls, Jerusalem Artichoke and Ginger Soup and Homemade Sourdough Doughnuts. There are regular specials and everything can be eaten in or served as a takeaway.

The London Particular itself is located just over the bridge from New Cross Railway station in south east London. It serves freshly cooked food from local, independent suppliers. Everything they serve is a blend of hearty, British, well sourced, served in a tin bowl and embellished with distinct spices and flavours. It’s all healthy, natural and impeccably tasty. They like to be Particular.

Email carl@thesocial.com to book in for lunch or dinner.

Time To Get Schizodelic

This Friday it’s time to get Schizodelic.

Mixing Mods with Rockers, Punks with Proggers, Concrete Jungle with African Bush, Brazilian Nuggets with Turkish Delights, Sweet’n’Sour Krauts with Big Macs and Crisp Rappers with Cheesy Ravers any flavour is for the tasting.

Based on a super tight blend of three amigos triple-teaming behind the decks The Schizodelic Sound shall make one shake thy rattle, rok ya Rolex and get on up to get on down. With much unexpected diggings alongside stone-cold classics from the most open book of musical revelry there is a sound for one and all to rejoice in!

Spear headed by DJ Guy C (Gorillaz Sound System [MK1] and The Bees Tour DJ, throwing it down on the decks like a man possessed), Aaron Fletcher (The Bees main man, song writer and internationally treasured musical innovator) and Tim Rockins (Zombie Flesh Eater, mindblowing maximalist artist and graphical craftsman busting with the A to Z of sound).  It all adds up to the most ridiculously dope record box you’ve ever looked in, combined with Kaleidoscopically-psychephrenic lightshows, visuals and animated posters The Schizodelic Sound is here. Fundamentally with the  basic ideal of keeping the dance floor alive.

The Schizodelic Sound start this Friday the 27th January and will be in residence on the last Friday of every month.

The Celestial Cinema

The first of a monthly film club curated by Jeff Barrett starts on Monday 27th February . .

Saint Etienne and Heavenly Films present:

What Have You Done Today, Mervyn Day?

Directed by Paul Kelly

What Have You Done Today Mervyn Day? (2005) continues Saint Etienne’s  ongoing fascination with the city of London and its diverse array of
people, space and places. Directed by Paul Kelly, this superb  documentary explores East London’s neglected Lower Lea Valley,  beautifully
capturing the areas’ last moments before it undergoes a  major redevelopment programme that will transform it from a derelict  wasteland into the
site for the 2012 Olympic Games. (running time 46 minutes).

plus

Drift Street

A short film by Michael Smith, the writer and presenter of BBC’s ‘Drivetime’ and ‘Citizen Smith’.

Michael says: Drift Street is the first thing I’ve directed. If the Culture Shows are “picture essays” then Drift Street is a kind of “picture-poem”, more open-ended, less constrained by linear narrative. It was commissioned for the Floating Cinema as part of the Create Festival, which promotes the cultural life of the East End.
