MONDAY 24TH OCTOBER

Very special guests:

Thurston Moore + Charles Hayward (This Heat)

+ Roughtrade DJs

We are pleased to announce this latest addition to the Rough Trade 40th anniversary celebration shows, this very special evening featuring Thurston Moore and Charles Hayward. Two iconic musicians, long dedicated to the art of improvisation as both fans and performers will collaborate for what promises to be a genuine one-off event. Hosted at The Social, and with a Rough Trade DJs line-up of James Endeacott, Simon Russell and Amy Hurst, this will undoubtedly be a night to remember.

MONDAY 31ST OCTOBER

Very special guests:

Josh T. Pearson

Duke Garwood & Smoke Fairies

Will Burns & Adam Chetwood

+ Roughtrade DJs

In a hugely exciting addition to the Rough Trade 40th Anniversary programme, we are pleased to announce a very special show at The Social on Monday 31st October. Featuring headline act Josh T. Pearson, fresh from the triumph of a reformed Lift to Experience Royal Festival Hall Meltdown show, kindly agreeing to a one-off performance of rare intimacy. Josh has long been a friend to Rough Trade, and all at the shops have equally long admired the unique, literate and original work of this singular interpreter of American song. Also appearing will be Duke Garwood and Smoke Fairies, collaborating especially for the evening. Two acts who delicately balance an innately British sensibility with a gritty, blues-y suite of American influences to create truly original music, their work together promises to be something not to be missed. And opening proceedings will be the poet Will Burns and pedal-steel guitar player Adam Chetwood. Adam is a veteran of both recording and touring bands, having workedwith the likes of White Denim, Black Peaches, Legends of Country and Mark Ronson. Will is poet-in-residence at long-time allies of Rough Trade, Caught by the River and published by iconic English publisher Faber & Faber. An evening that we hope will show off the rude health of music made in the apparently simple mechanics of voice and guitar, and pushing the boundaries of the rough folk traditions of both the UK and America into new, exciting, literate spaces. And all in one of our favourite venues.

Welcome To Burgershackland Party – This Thursday!

Print

Illustrator Rob Flowers has been collaborating with burger blogger Burgerac on various projects since 2011. Now the pair have put on an exhibition of illustrative work created for Burgerac’s Burgershack brand on the walls of legendary music bar, The Social.

As well as putting artwork on the walls Rob and Burgerac have been cooking up some tasty products to launch while the show is running.

all-3-pins-on-white-980

Here is not one but THREE Burgerac + Rob Flowers enamel pin badges for your burger-loving eyes – a burger pin, a fries pin and a beer pin. The pin badges (£10 each) are of the hard enamel, polished variety and look TOTALLY MINT and only a small number of each have been manufactured. While a number of each pin will be available to buy individually, there are 20 sets of all three pins (£25) that come packaged in a rather nice little box with a shiny gold sticker on it:

boxed-set-of-3-pins-1600

The pins will launch at a special Welcome To Burgershackland party at The Social on Thursday 29th September along with a super-limited edition two-colour screen printed T-shirt (look out for a separate blog post about that in a few days time). Think of it less as a private view and more of a free party to which you’re very much invited!

Whatever stock is left after the party will go on sale online in the shop at burgerac.com.

Since launching his Burgerac’s Burgershack kitchen residency at The Royal Oak pub in Marylebone in July 2014, London’s pre-eminent blogger and “burger detective” has drawn praise for his delicious comfort food from the likes of The Evening Standard, Cool Hunting (US), RES (Sweden), We The Food Snobs, The Londoner, and the venture even appeared listed alongside such cultural landmarks as The Tate Modern, The Riverside Café and The Groucho Club in a piece on MatchesFashion.com focusing on London Hotspots. Heck, The Times’ food writer, Giles Coren, recently professed his love of Burgershack’s Hubba Hubba burger on Twitter.

Now, The Social is super excited to announce that Burgerac and his team are bringing their awesome fare to its kitchen .  .

Some praise about Burgershack at The Royal Oak:

Had a cracking cheeseburger at Burgershack residency at The Royal Oak. The fried mustard double [Hubba Hubba] was king.” Giles Coren

A laid-back joint where high quality burgers and good times reign supreme.” Karen Day (Cool Hunting) 9/10 London’s Best Burgers

A sort of burger temple.” We Are The Food Snobs

Fatboy Slim Celebrates 20 Years Of ‘Better Living Through Chemistry’

FBS

FATBOY SLIM CELEBRATES 20 YEARS OF ‘BETTER LIVING THROUGH CHEMISTRY’ AT THE SOCIAL

Exclusive DJ Set Announced, As Fatboy Slim Plays The Album In Its Entirety, With Added Bonus Fun,

On September 13th

SEMINAL DEBUT ALBUM ‘BETTER LIVING THROUGH CHEMISTRY’ REISSUED ON 23rd SEPTEMBER ON SKINT

100 free tickets available from DICE FM on Thursday 1st Sept at 9am

Twenty years to the day since it was first unveiled to the world, Fatboy Slim’s debut album ‘Better Living Through Chemistry’ will be rereleased on September 23rd on Skint. To mark the occasion, Fatboy Slim AKA Norman Cook will be playing out the seminal album in its entirety at The Social, London on September 13th, with some extra special nuggets thrown into the mix for good measure. The Social (in it’s previously incarnation as The Heavenly Social) is the spiritual home of Big Beat, the club where Fatboy Slim found the perfect home for his melting pot of styles, amongst the increasingly homogenised Super-Clubland scene of the mid-90s. With a capacity of a little over 100, the chance to see Fatboy Slim returning to where it all began promises to be a truly special night of beats, hedonism and celebration of the album that kick started an entire movement.

After a prolific period for Cook in the early 90s under various guises of Beats International, Freak Power, The Mighty Dubcatz and Pizzaman, ‘Better Living Through Chemistry’ was the album that saw the birth of Fatboy Slim as an artist and DJ. The album would define a scene and an ethos and introduce the world to one of the biggest Superstar DJs of the era. Effortlessly blending big funk and hip-hop beats with the euphoria of Acid House, the album drips with innovative and witty samples and perfectly captures the good-time vibes of the mid-90s own Summer Of Love – music made for a grotty club next to Brighton pier that went on to conquer the world. It was the first artist album to be released on highly influential dance label Skint.

The album will be available on expanded 2CD and special limited edition yellow vinyl formats. The 2CD version will feature the album in its entirety on disk one and a second bonus disk of rare B-Sides and previously unreleased material.
