Emma Warren’s book Make Some Space tells the story of under-the-radar venue Total Refreshment Centre, a place with a remarkable history that includes a period where it ran as a Caribbean social club and its beginnings as a chocolate factory.
The book argues for space, especially grassroots, people-propelled spaces where we can be welcomed as versions of ourselves that we recognise. Come to The Social, which has been making space for nearly 20 years, to celebrate the book and the communities that made it – and all the places like it.
Broadcaster and poet Haseeb Iqbal will be interviewing Emma Warren and TRC studio resident Dan ‘Danalogue’ Leavers, and Emma will also be reading from her book.
Bring an idea of a place that had a similar effect on you. Emma will be collecting a list of these places from people as they arrive.
Emma-Jean Thackray will be DJing once the chat’s done.
Copies of Make Some Space will be on sale. Image: Rosie Reed Gold, taken from the book. https://www.rosiereedgold.com/
