Asian Tones returns to celebrate International Women’s Month for a third year running, with an evening of brilliant live music from across the East, South-East and South Asian diasporas and genres.

Join us at The Social, Oxford Circus, on 13th March, where we’ll be hearing from three feature artists from our community: Northwest London’s barrier-breaking artist and DJ Princess Xixi, singer-songwriter sensation Niki Kini and, multi-genre, multi-talented performer and producer SO SHA. We’ll also be opening up our evening to you, with six shorter open mic-style sets—keep an eye on our socials for more information on submitting to take part.

This year, our International Women’s Month show is co-curated and hosted by Malaysian British freelance journalist Suyin Haynes. Follow @asiantones on Instagram to learn more about our artists gracing the stage for this special evening.

Princess Xixi

Northwest London artist, DJ and Wasian menace Princess Xixi makes angry sadgyal bass music for mentally ill rave baes. Imagine the unholy lovechild of a grime MC and a pre-gentrification Camden scene queen and you might come close to describing Princess Xixi. Spitting, singing and screaming over beats that mix footwork, grime, jungle and more with alt rock songwriting, Xixi’s flipping the script on bars and bass. Her barrier-breaking music reflects her eclectic influences and singular upbringing as a mixed race, British-Chinese trans woman in London.

Bursting onto the scene in June 2022 with her debut track “Leng Loi”, racking up over 130,000 streams and a concerningly loyal fanbase, Xixi has since become a rising star in the London scene with a series of jaw-dropping live performances and DJ sets at iconic venues.

Niki Kini

At 21 years old, Niki Kini is no stranger to the music scene. The singer-songwriting sensation started out on YouTube at the age of 15, and has since worked alongside the likes of RAYE and Rina Sawayama.

Niki’s sultry vocals dance perfectly with her honest and playful lyrics and her co-production on her music. Her RnB tinged alternative pop earned her the accolade as Bobby Friction’s (BBC Asian Network) youngest ever ‘Artist of the Week’, as well as performing at BBC Introducing Live 2018 at the Tobacco Docks, and Going South Festival 2022 hosted by Bobby Friction. Through all this Niki has remained 100% independent, maintaining the same integrity over herself as she does in her music.

SO SHA

SO SHA is a neurodivergent, Norwich-based Filipino performer, songwriter and producer recently receiving the UK Global Talent Visa. She performs DJ sets with live vocals + improv and dancing on rollerblades, injecting her original pop trance songs and singalong, engaging pop remixes. SO SHA is now working on weaving together her experiences from both worlds, including creating multi-genre electronic music in English and Filipino. She has been supported by BBC Sounds, Foundation FM, Reprezent Radio, British Council, Unlimited, Drake Music, and Arts Council England.

SO SHA’s songs are a hopeful reminder for us that ultimately we’re all in this beautiful life together, floating about in outerspace – we might as well dance and sing while we’re here. She prides herself on her alcohol-free stance on life and she hopes that in her music, you’ll find that you belong.
