If it wasn’t for The Social in Central London, who knows how Starsailor’s career would have gone.
It was following the band’s show there in April 2000 that NME said: “One live encounter was enough to convince many sceptics that here was a band who were genuinely special, blessed with a singer whose voice thrummed like an emotional telegraph wire, that swerved the pitfalls of indie melancholia and were clearly in love with rock ‘n’ roll and all its possibilities.”
In that moment, their entire career changed:18 months later, they had released a critically-acclaimed debut album, enjoyed three top-40 singles, and were about to go on their first major UK headline tour. Given that 2025 marks their 25th Anniversary, Starsailor wanted to go back to where it all began.
Singer and guitarist James Walsh said: “We’re really excited to return to The Social, where we played our first ever London gig back in 2000 – this time with our drummer Ben Byrne, who doesn’t need the time off from Bargain Booze any more!”
Starsailor are an indie-rock band known for their anthemic pop/rock. Formed in Wigan by music students James Walsh (vocals/guitar), James Stelfox (bass), and Ben Byrne (drums), the band went through several guitar-heavy embryonic line-ups before the arrival of keyboardist Barry Westhead (keyboards) cemented their sound.
